As a Pianist-composer I am an artist, teacher, and performer dedicated tothe craft of music and creation. A Michigan native, I began my piano studies at an early age and also studied flute. I later went on to study piano with Dr. Michael Coonrad of Interlochen Arts Academy. In primary school I actively participated and excelled in Solo & Ensemble as well as All-State. I attended Western Michigan University as a piano student of Dr. Sylvia Roederer and Dr. C. Curtis-Smith. While at WMU I was interested in composition where my talent blossomed under the direction of Dr. Christopher Briggs, Dr. Lisa Coons, and Dr. Richard Adams and received he his B.M. in Music Composition in 2014. I continued my studies at Central Michigan University, studying composition with Dr. David Gillingham, Dr. Jay Batzner, and Dr. Scott Harding. At CMU I remained an active performer and promoter of new music, chamber music, and collaborative piano. I discovered an aptitude for theory pedagogy and an interest in the history of the string quartet. My master’s thesis, “24 Transcendental Etudes for String Quartet” takes after the compositional ideas of the likes of Bach, Chopin, Liszt and Lyapunov and adapts them for the string quartet. I received my M.M. in Composition from CMU in 2016.
I have received awards and honors including first prize in the Franklin G. Fisk composition Award for New Chamber Music and honorable mention in CMU’s Orchestral Composition Competition. My works have been performed at Electroacoustic Barndance Music Festival, SCI V Region Conference, the Music House, and MBSOA District and State Solo and Ensemble. I have served as a private piano instructor, chamber ensemble coach, conductor, pianist, and adjudicator for Michigan Music Educators Association.
As a teacher I stress the importance of sound technique balanced by theoretical and historical knowledge. I approach each student as a unique individual and tailor my teaching to best serve each student’s needs and personal musical goals. I am comfortable working with students of all ages and interests and look forward to continuing growth for all musicians.
