My musical experiences began at a young age through church choirs and piano lessons. I started taking lessons at age 5, on an old piano my grandmother had inherited. Music in my life was always a community action, from singing hymns in church to shouting Bruce Springsteen songs in the car with my siblings. Music gave me the opportunity to communicate with the small town I grew up in, connecting me with the generations of family who had called it their home.
I was in choir all throughout middle and high school, enjoying the opportunity it provided for me to make music with my closest friends. I was enthralled by the idea of an art that succeeded only through unity, and I fell in love with choral music. I began to take voice lessons to further explore vocal music as a career path, and found a whole new genre of music to connect with. I made the decision to pursue Vocal Music Education and I am currently finishing this degree at Oakland University.
My time at Oakland has been more beneficial than I ever could have dreamed of. The faculty and rigorous course requirements have forced me to be the best musician possible. I taught piano and voice for two years at Grand Blanc Music before moving to be closer to school. I direct a church choir in Seymour Lake, where I am loving the opportunity to explore music from my past while discovering something new almost every week.
When I’m shamelessly dancing alone in my car, I listen to a variety of music. I have a passion for folk and bluegrass, and enjoy late night jam sessions with friends playing old Pete Seeger songs. My parents made sure I was well-versed in Classic Rock, and my hours spent hanging out backstage in theaters have cultivated a passion for Broadway. When it comes to Classical Music, Beethoven and Debussy rank among my most played, though Britten and Copland are my favorite to perform.
In my free time outside of my musical life, I love to read, be outdoors, and spend time with family. I have worked as a nanny for seven years and I love being around kids.
I am thrilled to be a part of the Expressions team and look forward to contributing to a more musical community!
