Lisa Keeney - Saxophone & Clarinet

As a musician, I personally strive to focus on three main points of excellence: performance, research, and education.

A native Michigander, I received my Masters in Music Performance from the University of Michigan (2016) and Bachelors of Music Education from Grand Valley State University (2014), studying primarily with Dr. Timothy McAllister, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, and Dr. Dan Graser. I also studied with Professor Joseph Lulloff at the Brevard Music Festival (2014).

I endeavor to remain active in all kinds of performances, and particularly enjoy new collaborations with living composers, as well as researching and performing existing music. For example, my Masters Recital program was titled New | Standard, which comprised of both new music for saxophone (including a commission from a student composer) and pieces that are considered standard repertoire. This program is a great example of the kind of music I like to perform, research, and promote.

As a soloist, I appeared at the 2011 Michigan Music Conference, was the concerto competition winner at GVSU in 2013, and was a semi-finalist in the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) Solo Competition (2014). My performance interests also include the art of chamber and ensemble music; the Eero Saxophone Quartet performed at the Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, NASA Region V Conference, and Interlochen Arts Academy. Eero Quartet won first place in the UM Briggs Chamber Music Competition (2015), and was third place in the Music Teachers National Association Competition (2016).

I am actively interested in music editing, arranging, research, and publication. In 2014, my edition of Selections from The Bride Elect by John Philip Sousa was premiered at GVSU. I currently work as an editor for the UM Gershwin Initiative, a program designed to release newly-edited publications of George Gershwin’s music based on the manuscripts and other primary sources.

As an educator, I served as a student teacher in Northview, MI and Spring Lake, MI, teaching both elementary general music and secondary band. I have also taught privately and coached local band camps, given masterclasses to various high schools as part of residencies with the Eero Quartet, and currently serve as the Saxophone Instructor at Expressions Music Academy (Novi).
