Maggie Mckelvey

When I say that music has been a part of my entire life, I am not exaggerating. Before I was even born I was already listening to great composers such as Mozart and Beethoven through headphones that my mother placed on her stomach while pregnant. By the time I was two years old I had attended my first symphony at the DSO, and by four I was dancing around kindermusik and learning to play every parents least favorite instrument, the recorder. At six I finally was considered old enough to graduate from the recorder and begin violin lessons. I enjoyed violin, but my Suzuki instructor lived an hour away. After a year and a half of lessons, spending two hours in the car became tiring, and we switched to piano lessons which were closer.
I have loved the piano ever since I started, though there have been many moments when I found it challenging to stay disciplined. Practicing is not always the most enjoyable activity, but even through the tiring moments it has always had a special place in my heart.
After shadowing Grace Allasio at Expressions during my junior year of high school, I decided that I wanted to focus more seriously on music. I decided to major in piano at Oakland University so that I could teach and share my love of music with others, through piano lessons and beyond.
