Michelle ShanShan Ding is a concert pianist and opera singer, known for her versatility performing in both mediums. In July 2016 she played Yellow River Concerto with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and in the same concert she sang the famous Cheese operatic song “I Love You, China” with the orchestra. In 2014, she did a concert in Shanghai Grand Theatre where she performed five solo piano works including Beethoven's Appassionata Sonata and Liszt's Faust Waltz and sang four arias including Puccini's O Mia Babbino Caro and Lehar's Mein Lippen sie Kussen so Heiss.
As a pianist, she has traveled around the world and attended many festivals. In 2015 she performed Rachmaninoff piano concert no. 2 in Perugia, Italy. As an opera singer, her roles includes Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro. In 2011 she attended Hawaii Performing Arts Festivals where she sang Octavia in Strauss's Die Rosenklavier. From 2011 to 2014 She did 15 solo piano and vocal recitals in venues such as churches, Women's Club, retirement communities.
Growing up in a musical and theatrical family, Michelle was a singing prodigy. She was a winner of the “Five Star” TV Show in Shanghai when she was 12, and at the age of 13 she and her family won “Family Has Got Talent” TV show. Because she likes to accompany her parents' singing, she started studying the piano.
Michelle got her masters degree of piano performance from the University of Michigan in April 2016, and her bachelors degree in both piano and singing from California Institute of the Arts. Currently she is a 1st-year doctorate student in piano performance at the Michigan State University. She wants to pursue a career as a professor of voice and piano in the future.
