Dr. Ham Chan

Introducing EMA’s official collaborative pianist for the Metro DC area, Dr. Ham Chan. Any instructors or students interested in securing his services should contact him directly. Dr. Chan offers special pricing to EMA students (see below for more info) and is available to accompany any instrument for recitals, competitions, exams, and more.

Hong Kong pianist Ham Chan embarked on his musical journey at the age of 11, and at 18, he began his formal professional training in piano. His profound affinity for classical music, cultivated independently without the crutch of early formal guidance, has bestowed upon him a unique perspective, infusing his interpretations with a distinctive and artistic flair.

Chan holds a Doctoral degree in Piano Performance from the University of Maryland, College Park, a Performance Diploma from Mannes School of Music, an M.M. from the Boston Conservatory, and a B.A. (Hon.) in Music from Hong Kong Baptist University. Guided by esteemed mentors Larissa Dedova, Vladimir Valjerevic, Janice Weber, Gregory Haimovsky, and Pang Jane Cheung.

Chan has been recognized for his talent, receiving top prizes in various piano competitions, including the Pro-Romania International Piano Competition and the New York Piano Festival and Competition. He has also had the privilege of participating in masterclasses conducted by renowned musicians such as Jörg Demus, John O’Conor, and Kirill Gerstein.

Chan has been associated with distinguished musical festivals worldwide. He has been an alumna of notable programs, including Beethoven Bootcamp in Ireland, Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival in the United States, Music Fest Perugia in Italy, and Stars at the Rhine Festival in Switzerland.

Chan’s upcoming album, “<Masks under the mask>,” is eagerly anticipated. Set to be released in Fall 2024 under the Centaur Classic label, the album showcases a captivating selection of Schumann’s character pieces, spanning his productive early period to his introspective and profound late years.
